Early morning run: Plan your morning

Early morning run

Love the idea of integrating an early morning into your schedule, but daunted at the idea of it? It might feel a little off-putting at first. Wait, there’s actually people who get up before 7am, 6am, or even 5am, to run before they go to work? Yep! Now I know some runners are rising before 5am to fit in running and childcare duties in, and then on top of that, they have to drive or commute to work.

But here’s my early morning run schedule I like to follow.

Early morning run schedule

I start work at 8am (I work remotely, so I need to be logged on by that time), but I have some responsibilities and things I like to do before I start work, as well as the early morning run.

5:50 AM: Wake up to alarm; snoozing scientifically confuses your body (as Mel Robbins tells us; she’s a motivational speaker and author.) Get up, have a good, thorough stretch and get your running kit on. I use Mel’s “3,2,1” method. Count backwards in your head (not forwards) from 3 and then get out of bed on 1. By distracting your brain as soon as it wakes up, you’re not letting any distractions in. But if you count 1,2,3, your brain will probably start thinking about how comfy you are, and how much you don’t want to get out of your cosy nest… Try it!

6:00 AM – 6:15 AM: Enjoy a light breakfast, such as a bowl of oatmeal or a piece of fruit with yogurt. I actually can’t eat before I run when I’ve just woken up, and my body is okay with that. I always fuel up the day and evening before though, and hydrate plenty. I talk all about that in ‘running in the morning‘.

6:30 AM: Run for about 30 minutes; leaving room for an extra 15 minutes depending on how I feel..

7:15 AM: Return home from my run. Shower and get ready!

7:30 AM: Walk our little, loveable dog.

7:40 AM: Make myself and my partner a cuppa and coffee; breathe before work..

8:00 AM: Log on. (I’ll then get breakfast during the first hour or so, ish, I like to listen to my body, and then replenish correctly).
