I’ve been hiking for a long time now. I raised money for Newlife when I did the Malvern hills challenge. I love it because there are so many great benefits. Check out this article on the benefits of hiking on mental health.
New to hiking? Let’s go through some top tips.
How can you stay safe while hiking?
That means:
- packing the right gear
- wearing appropriate clothing
- carrying enough water and food
- being aware of the weather conditions
Packing the Right Gear
One of the most important safety tips for hiking is to pack the right gear. A well-packed backpack can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. Here are some essential items to pack:
1. Map and Compass
Always bring a map and compass to ensure that you stay on the right trail and can navigate your way back to your starting point.
Shop at Mountain Warehouse.
2. First Aid Kit
A first aid kit is essential in case of an injury or accident. The kit should include bandages, antiseptic, and any medication that you may need.
Shop at Mountain Warehouse.
3. Flashlight
A flashlight is essential in case you get caught out after dark. Make sure to bring extra batteries as well.
Shop with Amazon.
4. Sun Protection
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential to protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. I’d be lost without mine.
5. Multi-Tool
A multi-tool can be used for a variety of tasks, such as cutting rope or opening cans. It depends where you’re hiking as I’ve never needed one!
6. Whistle
A whistle can signal for help in case of an emergency.
Wearing Appropriate Clothing
Wearing appropriate clothing is essential for staying safe while hiking. Here are some tips for choosing the right clothing:
1. Layering
Dress in layers so that you can easily adjust your clothing as the weather changes. You don’t want to get too hot and sticky.
2. Breathable Fabrics
Choose clothing made of breathable fabrics, such as cotton or wool. It will help you keep cool. Otherwise you’ll feel so uncomfortable and you won’t enjoy the hike as much.
3. Footwear
Wear sturdy and comfortable hiking boots with good ankle support.
4. Socks
Wear high-quality socks made of wool or synthetic materials. They’ll wick away moisture and prevent blisters. You can get some trekking socks from Amazon.
Mountain Warehouse do sell them, but you don’t need to pay a fortune.
5. Hat
Wear a hat to protect your head and face from the sun’s harmful rays.
Fuel up!
Carrying enough water and food is essential for staying safe while hiking. Dehydration and hunger can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and other health problems. Here are some tips for staying hydrated and well-fed while hiking:
1. Water
Carry plenty of water and drink water regularly throughout the hike. It’s better to take more than you need than not enough!
2. Food
Pack high-energy snacks such as nuts, granola bars, and dried fruit to keep your energy levels up. You can get them nice and cheap from Aldi.
Shop at Tesco.
3. Meals
If you plan on hiking for a full day or more, pack meals that are high in protein and carbohydrates. Take as sandwiches or pasta and pack it full of tuna and salad to bulk it out. Love that extra flavour.
Look at the forecast
Being aware of the weather conditions is essential for staying safe while hiking. Weather can change so fast. Don’t underestimate that! So, it’s important to be ready for a sudden downpour, especially in the UK!
Here are some tips for staying safe in different weather conditions:
1. Hot Weather
Wear clothes that are very loose. Get yourself a sunhat or cap to protect yourself from the sun. Take frequent breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. There’s nothing worse if you get this wrong!
I have a skin condition called Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria. It means I have to keep nice and cool. If I wear tight clothing, I can have a flare up. So this is really important.
2. Cold Weather
Get your layers on and wear a cosy hat and gloves to stay warm. Avoid sweating by removing layers as needed and stay dry to prevent hypothermia. This is generally only a problem in the much colder parts of the UK.
3. Rainy Weather
Wear a rain jacket. At the very least, take one with you. Once you get wet, you’re soaked. If it’s not due to be dry and warm, you’ll feel horrible on the rest of your hike. So just be prepared.
Shop at Blacks.
4. Windy Weather
Wear windproof clothing and be aware of the potential for falling branches or other debris. Plan ahead the best days to go. If it’s due to be bad weather, don’t go that day.
Shop at Decathlon.
Kit up, and enjoy your hike
Hiking is a great way to explore the outdoors and enjoy the beauty of But However, it’s important to take proper safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Fuel up, and get the right kit. You’ll have a fab time.
